ATK took a massive step in the right direction as they rode two brilliant Manuel Lanzarote free-kicks to earn a crucial 2-1 win over Jamshedpur FC on Sunday. The win takes Steve Coppell’s men level on points with Jamshedpur and three points off the top four.
Coppell made several tactical changes going into the match and the tweaks seemingly worked out in the team's favour. Asked about his assessment of the new setup, Coppell said, "It looked solid. We had a real threat going forward with the drive and the pace, the mobility. The shape fits a lot of the players. If you ask me now whether it suits us, I would say yes."
The Englishman then went on to praise new signing Edu Garcia’s massive influence on the team. The Spaniard was ATK's standout player on the night alongside Lanzarote. "He is a quality player. You see that in his movement. He actually hasn’t trained this week at all. He’s had a knock on his ankle, and he has come through tonight playing almost the entire 90 minutes. He complements players. I always think that good players complement other players and he does that. He’s a connection with a lot of players in midfield. It’s a real bonus to be able to bring him in January," he said.
Jamshedpur head coach Cesar Ferrando, on the other hand, expressed his disappointment with the way the team lost the match. "We made stupid mistakes because their player falls near the box. The Kolkata player arrived with the ball from the half-line, we should have taken a foul, a yellow card probably. But they fouled him near the box. It's very difficult to understand this. In the second-half we created good chances to level the match. I think we deserved to be level. My keeper didn’t really make any saves during the match. He conceded from only free-kicks. I’m still very proud of my team," he said.
Ferrando however, refused to consider that Jamshedpur’s playoff ambitions had taken a damaging blow due to the loss. The Spaniard said, "No, there is too much left. There are still four matches to go. The next match against Mumbai is the most important. We need to win our matches. We have to fight until the end of the season. There are difficult matches for all the teams."
