Kerala and ATK share spoils in opener

Despite their low positions in the table, the year’s first clash between Kerala Blasters and ATK was always going to serve up a treat. Given their historic rivalry, both sets of supporters were eagerly waiting in anticipation for the tie. After a goalless 80 minutes, ATK gained the lead through debutant Edu Garcia’s clever free-kick. However, just as it looked like ATK would run away with all three points, an unfortunate own goal by Gerson Vieira ensured that both teams shared the spoils.

Unbeaten streaks come to an end

The first week of fixtures in the new calendar year also saw Bengaluru lose their unbeaten streak. The Blues had enjoyed a fruitful first-half of the season where they went on a league-high 11-match unbeaten run. However, they would finally meet their match on January 27 when Mumbai City picked up a 1-0 victory over them. The Islanders, themselves, had endured a purple patch of form, finding themselves on top of the table and going on a nine-match unbeaten streak. Unfortunately, Jorge Costa’s men would eventually succumb in their very next match following the Bengaluru encounter, going down against FC Goa at home.

Brown’s new-look Pune gives Chennaiyin the Blues

After a slow start to the campaign, FC Pune City are slowly but steadily on the resurgence. After winning the last two matches prior to the end of the first half of the season, the Stallions appointed Phil Brown as their new head coach for the remainder of the campaign. In his first match against Chennaiyin FC, Pune displayed the quality which had been lacking earlier on. Despite going a goal down, they fought back immediately with two quick-fire goals from Marcelo Pereira. In the end they ran out as deserved 2-1 winners, the perfect start for the Englishman.

Corominas sets a new record

FC Goa’s top marksman Ferran Corominas broke a long-standing record in the Hero ISL when he scored his 29th goal in the league against Mumbai City FC. The Spaniard contributed to Goa’s victory over Mumbai as he struck from the penalty spot in the second half. Corominas will undoubtedly be in a heated race with FC Pune City’s Iain Hume until the end of the season for the distinction of being the league’s all-time top scorer.
