After honing his skills under various coaches, the composed central midfielder (who has also played as a withdrawn striker) found his feet at Amity United (Haryana), Hindustan FC and Indian National FC (both Delhi). It was Bernard Oparanozie who recommended him to Mohun Bagan. Maithani scored on his debut for Mohun Bagan against Viva Kerala in October 2009 and followed that up with a goal against arch-rivals East Bengal in an I-League derby that the Mariners won 5-3. That feat catapulted him to instant stardom, a regular place in the starting XI and also into the national reckoning. Hero ISL 2016 will be his third consecutive season with the Stallions.
