ATK Mohun Bagan defeated table-toppers Hyderabad FC 2-1 in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Athletic Stadium in Bambolim, Goa on Tuesday to enter the top four.

A brilliant counter-attack by Juan Ferrando’s side was finished off by Liston Colaco (56’) early in the second half and their lead was doubled when Manvir Singh (59’) slotted the ball in the bottom corner. HFC got back into the game following a great volley by Joel Chianese (67’) but failed to score the equaliser and ATK Mohun went away with the three points.

It was a quickfire start to the match for the Mariners. They dominated the possession and created chances in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Hugo Boumous got the ball from Colaco and took the shot but it went wide of the post. Just minutes later, Boumous took another shot, from inside the box, but it was brilliantly saved by Laxmikant Kattimani.

Hyderabad FC got into the game as the first half progressed. Nikhil Poojary took HFC’s first shot of the game, but it was tipped over the bar by Amrinder Singh.

Liston Colaco then took a great shot from just outside the HFC box but, it was saved by Kattimani.

Both the goalkeepers were at the top of their games making saves throughout the first half and it ended with neither side being able to score.

The second half began just like the first. Rohit Danu missed a chance to put his side into the lead when his shot hit the crossbar. Manuel Marquez’s men paid for their missed chances, when Colaco scored, with a great finish, after a counter-attack by the Kolkata-based outfit.

Three minutes later, Manvir doubled ATK Mohun Bagan’s lead. He was through on goal and went around Kattimani to slot the ball into the back of the net.

However, HFC did not stay down for long. Joao Victor took a venomous shot from outside the box, which was parried away by Amrinder Singh into the path of Chianese who guided the ball into the back of the net.

Danu had an opportunity to equalise the score, but his powerful shot was pushed over the crossbar by Amrinder.

In stoppage time, Colaco was through on goal and had an empty goal to aim at, but he mis-hit the ball and it went over the crossbar.

Hyderabad FC tried their best to score the equaliser but a resolute defensive display by the Mariners prevented it.

This result takes ATK Mohun Bagan into the top four. HFC remains top in the Hero ISL table.
