Delhi Dynamos hit rock bottom with 1-4 loss to FC Goa
FC Goa lifted themselves off the bottom of the table with a resounding 4-1 victory over Delhi Dynamos FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the national capital on Thursday. It was Goa’s second win over the same rivals in the tournament and Delhi now are consigned to the cellar with seven points while Goa climb to seventh place after their first away win with eight points.
French defender Youness Bengelloun was the star of the match scoring once in each half before Robert Pirès got his first goal of the tournament via a penalty in the 53rd minute. Tolgay Özbey rounded off Goa’s tally with a clinical finish in the 60th minute. Delhi got a consolation goal through a penalty converted by Gustavo dos Santos in the 73rd minute.
There weren’t too many chances in the first half with the defences of both sides holding sway. Goa looked the more assured side going forward but Delhi centre backs Anwar Ali and Wim Raymaekers stood firm to deny the visitors in the first quarter. Goa took the lead in the 18th minute through an indirect corner variation when Bengelloun bundled the ball into the net after goalkeeper Kristof Van Hout had parried a stiff Peter Carvalho header.
Goa doubled the lead just three minutes into the second half when André Santos floated in a beautiful free kick from the right and Bengelloun rose the highest and got his header past the towering Van Hout. Five minutes later, Özbey was brought down by the Belgian goalkeeper and marquee man Pirès smashed his penalty to the right of the net. In another attacking move, Goa combined beautifully to open up the Delhi defence and Özbey hit the target after a nice run to make it 4-0.
Delhi finally began to exert sustained pressure and it paid off when Debabrata Roy handled the ball in the box and Brazilian youngster dos Santos beautifully put it past Czech goalkeeper Jan Šeda. The Dynamos piled on more pressure but were unable to reduce the margin further.
Harm van Veldhoven’s team will hope to resurrect their campaign when they host Kerala Blasters on November 16 at home while Zico’s squad will travel to Maximum City for a clash against Mumbai City FC on November 17.
