Former ATK head coach José Francisco Molina has been appointed as the new Sporting Director of the Spanish Football Federation. The Spaniard takes over the position from former Real Madrid player Fernando Hierro, who also coached Spain in the recent edition of the FIFA World Cup.

Molina, who spent a year as head coach of ATK, guided the team to their second Hero Indian Super League (ISL) trophy in 2016. The Kolkata-based side finished fourth during the league phase, but went on to beat arch-rivals Kerala Blasters FC in the Final through a penalty shootout. Under his stewardship, ATK scored a total of 20 goals in 17 games on their road to victory. During his stay, the two-time champions were known for their incredible grit and determination in getting results and their defensive masterclass.

Prior to coming to the Hero ISL, Molina also had managerial experience in the La Liga with Villareal and Getafe. During his playing career, the Spaniard represented Atletico de Madrid and Deportivo La Coruña as a goalkeeper, making over 350 appearances for the clubs. The 47-year-old also has nine caps for the Spanish national team in the period between 1996 and 2000.
