Lalrempuia Fanai started playing football in Mizoram and represented local side Bazarveng FC. Light in build but strong on his feet with excellent ball control, Fanai became the first instant trade player in the history of the Hero ISL when his services were acquired by FC Pune City in 2015. He moved to NorthEast United FC in 2016. Later he also enjoyed a brief loan spell with Minerva Punjab FC. The midfielder made nine appearances during the 2020-21 Hero ISL season, most for him in a season.
