Born in Amsterdam, Gregory Nelson played in the youth teams of AZ Alkmaar before making his senior team debut in the Dutch Eredivisie in 2007 against Heracles Almelo. In 2017, Nelson signed for Kazakhstan Premier League side FC Kaisar, but his contract was terminated shortly after for personal reasons, and thereafter he moved to the Bahrain side Al-Muharraq. Gregory later signed for Chennaiyin FC and was a livewire on the wings for them in 2017-18, creating the most number of chances. He ended the season with five assists to his name, the most by any player in the Hero ISL playoffs history.
