Sankar Roy began his football career with Hero I-League club Mohammedan SC, making his debut during the 2016-17 season in the second division. He joined Mohun Bagan AC during the 2017-18 season. He took a while to get going there though. His rite of passage came in the 2019-20 season when he kept seven clean sheets in 14 matches and helped Mohun Bagan AC lift the Hero I-League trophy. Sankar made his Hero ISL debut with SC East Bengal during the 2020-21 season before moving to Hyderabad FC on loan during the January transfer window.
