The young forward was part of the Karnataka team in two editions of the Santosh Trophy and was awarded the best midfielder in the BDFA Super Division in 2020-21. He was on loan with Indian Arrows and made nine appearances for them in the 2019-20 Hero I-League. In August, ahead of Hero ISL 2021-22, Nikhil Raj joined Odisha FC from Kickstart FC.
