In 1997, Cahill asked his parents to allow him to travel to England to play professionally to which they obliged. He then signed for Millwall on a free transfer from his native Sydney United.
At Everton, he made a significant impact for the Merseysiders, by becoming only the first Evertonian in 18 years and the first from an AFC nation to be nominated in the top 50 list for Ballon d’Or.
