Peter Hartley began his youth career with English club Sunderland AFC. He made his professional debut for the club in 2007 against Leicester City. He also spent time on loan at Chesterfield FC before moving to Hartlepool United in 2009 and went on to spend four years at the club and even captained the side for two seasons. After stints with Stevenage, Plymouth Argyle, Bristol Rovers and Blackpool, Hartley joined Scottish club Motherwell FC. He joined Jamshedpur FC ahead of the 2020-21 Hero ISL and was among their best players, scoring two goals in 19 appearances.
