Afghanistan skipper Zohib Islam Haroon Fakhruddin Amiri, better known as Zohib Amiri, started his football journey with Shoa FC and Kabul Bank. Over the years, he has played a vital role in reviving the fortunes of Afghanistan football.
In 2011, Amiri joined I-League side Mumbai FC and established himself as its lynchpin. Versatility and application saw him become a fan favourite, and he bagged the FPAI’s ‘fans player of the year award’ for the 2012-13 season. A defender by trade, Amiri can play across the defence or as a defensive midfielder. He also thrusts himself in the forward line if his team is trailing. In January 2014, Amiri joined Dempo and propelled the struggling club to a respectable fourth placed finish in the I-League.
On the international stage, Amiri has represented Afghanistan on 43 occasions, notching up five goals. This includes the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, SAFF Cup, AFC Challenge Cup etc. Amiri, captained the national team in 2014 AFC Challenge Cup.
