The Sengalese defender was part of the youth setup at Monaco, and made his first-team debut with the principality club in 2006. He made a handful of appearances for Monaco in his first two seasons, getting an international call-up in the process, before spending the next two years on loan to French clubs Le Havre and Nantes. He has also played for Greek side Atromitos – his one season with the Athens-based side is the only time he has played club football outside of France. He is known for his ability to read the play and intercept passes, as well as for strong ball retention. He brings a measured approach to defending rather than flying into tackles, and can play in any position in the back line.
