SC East Bengal secured their second win of the 2020-21 Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) after a 1-0 victory over Bengaluru FC at the Fatorda Stadium on Saturday. A goal from Matti Steinmann helped the Kolkata club to the victory and at the post-match press conference assistant coach Tony Grant said the Hero ISL debutants are still a work in progress.

“If you roll us back to the start, we only had two weeks of pre-season. We had a whole bunch of players who no one knew. So, it’s only common sense that it would take time. We have brought in a couple of new players who have done very well, like Ankit (Mukherjee). So, it’s a work in progress.

“We came into the league very late. We have had three games in six days and the boys have shown how fit they are and how much we can fight. It’s a good recipe for the future.”

The assistant coach however admitted that his side had some nervy moments in the match. “In football, one goal is never enough normally and Bengaluru are a good team. To be fair to them, they played a good game after losing their head coach this week and we got a good fight. Our boys showed that we can play with the ball in the first half, and we also showed that we can defend. So, it was a good day for them,” Grant said.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru’s interim head coach Naushad Moosa expected better finishing going forward after his side created many goal-scoring opportunities but failed to find the equaliser. “Nobody wants to miss chances. We were more attacking today and created a lot of opportunities. We need to work on our finishing now. It was not easy, but I am happy with the way that the boys played.

“We wanted to rotate the ball and we were doing that quite well. If you see the second half, we created a lot of scoring opportunities. So, we need to work on the finishing aspect now,” he said after Bengaluru suffered their fourth consecutive defeat.
