Portugal was appointed the head coach for the Stallions back in August before the Hero Indian Super League 2018-19 season. The Spaniard was the head coach for Delhi Dynamos FC for the Hero ISL 2017-18 season, in which the Lions finished 8th. He had a rocky start with Delhi but ended the season strongly. Portugal's Delhi were unbeaten in eight of the 11 matches they played in 2018. After a brief stint with Spanish club Granada CF, he came back to India to replace Ranko Popovic as Pune's head coach.
The Stallions have endured a disappointing start to the season under the Spaniard, failing to win any of their first three matches of the season. Pune drew their opening match of the season against Delhi and lost the next two against Mumbai City FC and Bengaluru FC. They are currently bottom of the league standings with one point after three matches and will be hoping for a turnaround when they travel to take on FC Goa.
