After two successive defeats in the second season of the Hero Indian Super League [ISL], last year’s semifinalists Chennaiyin FC brought their campaign back on track with a big 4-0 win against FC Goa at Fatorda’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday evening, leaving head coach Marco Materazzi a happy man.“We started with the right attitude, and I think for the whole game we kept this attitude. That’s why we had so many chances,” Materazzi told reporters after the match. The Italian also explained what his team did differently today. “I know the quality of each of our players because I have made up the team. Second half in Delhi we probably deserved to score. What was missing in the previous game was the right distances between attack, midfield and defence. Today we had this and we didn’t let them play their match,” he said.Chennai’s marquee player and last season’s top-scorer Elano had a slow start to this season by his standards, bringing him some criticism ahead of this game. Materazzi defended his star player. “I am the one who judges the form of Elano, it’s not anybody else. Today he showed us that he is a real champion, because he created three or four times the opportunity to score, and yes he showed us just what he is made of, what kind of champion he is.”Defender Mehrajuddin Wadoo also attended the press conference and said his team had come into the match with proper homework. “I think we played as a team, we saw the first two matches and saw that Goa scored in the first twenty minutes [almost], and we were prepared and played as a team, everyone contributed well and it really boosts the whole team. Even the coach told us the same thing in the beginning of the match that we have to stay together, and everyone did well.”Chennai conceded two penalties in their previous matches and when asked whether the back line came into the match under pressure because of that, Wadoo said: “It’s not only about the defence, eleven players play on the field. Everyone makes mistakes in the game. We don’t deal in only defence or attack, everyone tries his best when he’s on the field. We did really well and unfortunately conceded the penalty [in the previous games]. But today we were determined not to concede and we did really well today, and from the start we pressurized them.”
