Makan Winkle eyes first-team spot in competitive FC Goa
Playing in the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) for the first time can be an exciting yet tough challenge. However, FC Goa’s latest signing Makan Winkle Chothe seems unfazed and is ready to fight for a place in their starting XI. The 20-year-old winger recently shared his admiration for Goa and expressed his delight after signing for the Gaurs.
"It was a good opportunity for me. FC Goa is one of the best clubs in India. I have admired them ever since the Hero ISL started and I have watched each and every game of theirs. I like how they play and I always wanted to play for them," the 20-year-old attacker told goal.com.
The youngster then admitted that he is aware of the fight for places that awaits him in the Goa team as he looked forward to competing with the likes of Seiminlen Doungel, Brandon Fernandes and Redeem Tlang, who joined the Gaurs from NorthEast United FC, "There will be a lot of new players. So, it will be hard to play (and compete for a place) with them. Redeem Tlang and others are also new. Everybody will be fighting for a place and so will I."
Makan made his Hero I-League debut with Minerva Punjab FC during their victorious 2017-18 season. He also went on to make a name for himself after helping the Minerva Academy in Punjab win the Hero Elite League in 2018-19. Furthermore, the Manipuri lad has experience in the AFC competitions as well having made five appearances in the AFC Cup.
While looking ahead to FC Goa’s participation in the AFC Champions League in the upcoming season, Makan opined that the Gaurs can be expected to be competitive, "Obviously, the AFC Champions League will be more competitive and it will be very hard but for the way FC Goa plays, I think we can be very competitive."
