Former Jamshedpur FC captain Peter Hartley on Friday announced his retirement from professional football. The Indian Super League (ISL) Shield-winning captain is set to assume a coaching role at Middlesbrough FC.

“I’m done chasing these youngsters around the pitch. Time to hang up the boots. It’s been a pleasure.

“Really excited for my next step into coaching, something I’m deeply passionate about. Can’t wait to get started at Middlesbrough FC,” stated Hartley on his Instagram profile.

Hartley, 36, joined the Men of Steel from Motherwell FC in 2020 and was appointed the club captain. Under his leadership, Jamshedpur FC achieved significant progress, winning the ISL Shield title in the following season, marking the club's first silverware.

Hartley departed the club in December 2022 to rejoin his former team, Hartlepool United, on a short-term deal. The centre-back returned to India last summer, joining I-League side Inter Kashi.

A stalwart in defence, Hartley made 47 appearances during his two-and-a-half-year stint with Jamshedpur FC, achieving 15 clean sheets and scoring six goals, showcasing his commanding presence on the field.

Hartley began his playing career at Sunderland in 2006 and spent time at several English clubs, with notable periods at Hartlepool and Plymouth Argyle F.C. He also played three seasons with Scottish Premiership side Motherwell. Over his 18-year career, the centre-back made 490 appearances, scored 44 goals, and provided 17 assists.
