Iriondo: Tough to play well with constant injuries

Jamshedpur FC fell to their first home loss in Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2019-20 after a 2-1 defeat against Mumbai City FC at the JRD Tata Sports Complex on Thursday. The hosts had more possession and more chances but weren’t as clinical as the Islanders in the final third.
The home side’s head coach Antonio Iriondo assessed the game at the post-match press conference, stating, “We had many chances and played a good match. We had more possession and created opportunities but couldn’t win the match. We couldn’t score the goals and they had a few shots but scored two goals. It shows the quality of their players and we have to say that they played a good game tonight.”
When asked what they need to do for a change in fortunes, Iriondo said, “We need to keep working to improve now. As I said before the match, we need to try and win all our games. Once again we have injuries and I think that’s been the case for five games now….today we lost Piti after a bad challenge and the same thing happened to Sergio Castel as well. It’s really tough to play well with constant injuries.”
While looking ahead to Jamshedpur’s next three matches on the road, the Spaniard said, “For the players that are injured, it doesn’t matter if we’re home or away because they are injured and will be left to recuperate here. We hope they can recover as soon as possible because we’re striving for the top. The rest of the team, we’re happy with their performance tonight. The only thing is we need to score and that’s what we need to do next time.”
The 66-year-old coach also spoke about Jamshedpur’s youngsters. “I think (the youth) have already played a lot of matches and are part of the squad. As far as Aniket Jadhav goes, I’ve said before he’s a young player and needs to improve a lot on his consistency. He tends to do some great actions for a few minutes and then doesn’t do anything right for some time. So, he needs to keep improving on that aspect of his game and the situation is the same with Mobashir Rahman. We have confidence in them, but they are not the finished article yet and need to keep learning. Ultimately, if we don’t have enough foreign players due to injury, they will have to play,” Iriondo added.
