India beat Nepal to win fifth straight SAFF Women's Championship
The Indian women's football team clinched their fifth straight SAFF Women's Championship after beating hosts Nepal 3-1 in the final at the Sahid Rangashala Stadium in Biratnagar on Friday.
Dalima Chhibber opened the scoring for India on the 26th minute through a brilliant free-kick, only for Nepal's Sabitra Bhandari to equalise eight minutes later. The two sides went into the break level at 1-1.
India started the second half on the front foot and reaped the benefits on the 63rd minute when Grace Dangmei latched onto Sanju's threaded through ball, rounded up Nepal's goalkeeper and scored. Anju Tamang, who came on as a substitute, scored the third on the 78th minute to seal off the result.
The win continued India's dominance in the competition and extended their unbeaten run in the tournament to 23 matches. In this year's edition, India beat Maldives 6-0, Sri Lanka 5-0 and Bangladesh 4-0 en route to the final.
The final win over Nepal will also come as a redemption of sorts for India, who lost to the same opponents in the recently-concluded Hero Gold Cup in Odisha.
