FC Goa came back from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Jamshedpur FC in Match 38 of Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2020-21 at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco on Wednesday night. Igor Angulo’s second half brace, including an injury time winner, triumphed over Stephen Eze’s first half goal for Jamshedpur in what was a tightly-contested game of football.

  • Stephen Eze scored the first goal of the night for Jamshedpur FC in the 33rd minute.
  • Igor Angulo equalised for FC Goa from the penalty spot in the 64th minute.
  • The Spanish striker struck again in stoppage time to help FC Goa to their third win this season.

The match kicked off on an attacking note, with both sides creating chances on either end but it was FC Goa who had the first clear goal-scoring opportunity in the 13th minute. Brandon Fernandes crossed the ball to Angulo whose header went over the crossbar. The Spaniard, however, was adjudged to be offside.

It was Jamshedpur who opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. Aitor Monroy delivered a brilliant, long freekick into the Gaurs box and the cross was poked into the goal by Jamshedpur defender Stephen Eze, who stretched his right foot to meet the ball to score his second goal of the season.

Jamshedpur upped the ante after the goal as Nerijus Valskis collected the ball at the edge of the box and went for the shot. The effort however was mistimed and went wide of goal.

FC Goa worked hard for the equaliser at the other end but Jorge Ortiz Mendoza’s shot was comfortably collected by TP Rehenesh as the Gaurs entered the half-time a goal down.

Aniket Jadhav almost doubled the lead in the 52nd minute but Jamshedpur were denied by the able hands of FC Goa custodian Mohammad Nawaz. Isaac Vanmalsawma played the ball to Jackichand Singh who squared it to Jadhav. The 20-year-old winger’s final shot was parried away by Nawaz.

FC Goa stepped on the gas as they worked hard for the equaliser. The 53rd minute saw Angulo win the ball in midfield and make a run into the attacking third but his shot was well over the crossbar. A few minutes later, Angulo was at it again but his layoff to Ortiz and the eventual shot was safely caught by Jamshedpur goalkeeper Rehenesh.

The Gaurs at last drew level in the 64th minute after Angulo converted from the spot to hand his side the equaliser. Australian defender James Donachie made a darting run and was brought down by Jamshedpur midfielder Alexandre Lima. Igor then deceived the goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.

Both sides worked hard as they looked to take the lead, and Valskis almost restored it for Jamshedpur in the 70th minute. The Lithuanian striker’s direct freekick caught Nawaz by surprise but he was denied by the crossbar. At the other end, Goa scrambled for a chance of their own but the Jamshedpur defence did well to clear the ball.

Jamshedpur were denied by the crossbar yet again after Lima did well to beat his marker and went for goal. Although the Brazilian’s attempt beat the Goa goalkeeper, he hit the crossbar and the ball was adjudged to have bounced on the wrong side of the goal-line.

Owen Coyle’s side rued their missed chances after Angulo scored the winner for FC Goa in second half stoppage time. A corner from Edu Bedia was headed by Angulo into the Jamshedpur net and it ensured his side won all three points.
