FC Goa’s versatile defender Zohib Islam Amiri put in a solid all-round performance as the hosts snatched their first win and handed Delhi Dynamos FC their first defeat in the Hero Indian Super League. The Afghanistan skipper, who has turned out for Mumbai FC and Dempo earlier, was understandably ecstatic about the result. “It feels great, we waited a long time for this moment and it’s finally here. It’s also an honour to win in front of your fans. We trained so hard and our coach kept making us work hard so we will try to continue this form,” Amiri told Indiansuperleague.com after the match.Amiri came in for ex-gunner Andre Santos who was substituted in the first half after picking up an injury. He hoped that the Brazilian and suspended marquee player Robert Pirès would be back for the next match. “It was a big loss in this match especially when you’re 1-0 down, but the players showed us that we can play without Santos and Pirès by getting the two goals and we pray that these two players come back for the next game,” said the experienced Amiri, who had captained Afghanistan to SAFF Championship glory in 2013 when they beat India in the final.Amiri also thanked the Goan fans for their unstinting support during the match: “It’s always difficult when you’re a goal down but thanks to our supporters we were really encouraged and finally we got the result.”Known for his versatility, Amiri can play as a defender, midfielder and even attacker when required. “I can play anywhere and I’m just waiting for my coach to tell me where to play and I’ll play,” he declared, when asked about his preferred position in FC Goa line-up.
