FC Goa secured a 3-0 victory over Jamshedpur FC thanks to strong performances from Jorge Ortiz Mendoza and custodian Naveen Kumar in Match 58 of the 2020-21 Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) at the Fatorda Stadium on Thursday. Ortiz scored a brace, while Naveen, playing his first game of the season, kept the Jamshedpur attackers at bay all through the match.

At the post-match press conference, Gaurs head coach Juan Ferrando was satisfied with the performance but said he expected more goals. “I am happy because we got the three points. We controlled the space, and in some moments, we controlled the whole game. We create opportunities to score goals. We are not happy because some of these opportunities were one-against-one. I hope to improve these details because for us it is very important.”

The Gaurs sprung a selection surprise, with Igor Angulo on the bench and Ortiz leading the attack. “Every game is different and we prepare in a different way for every game. We prepared Ortiz to play in this position because we know about (Peter) Hartley and (Stephen) Eze and we wanted to exploit the space behind the line of defence,” said Ferrando.

Angulo, for the first time this season, didn’t start for Goa. Ferrando provided more information. “Angulo has been ill for the last two-three days, but he felt better and that was why we added him to the matchday squad. We have 25 players and we believe in all of them. The most important thing is to prepare for the game and work with all the players,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jamshedpur head coach Owen Coyle rued missed chances against a seasoned team like FC Goa. “What we didn’t do is take our chances tonight. Goa are a very good side and they have shown that season after season. They have some wonderful players. We knew what to expect from them. What we didn’t do was play up to our capabilities,” he said.

“We made some wonderful chances against FC Goa. Their goalkeeper was Hero-Of-The-Match because we created five or six great goalscoring opportunities. We have to be defensively better. When we are not good defensively and we create chances but don't score, so when you don't get those two right, you don't win games,” he added.
