FC Goa forward Iker Guarrotxena has been awarded the Hero of the Month award for December 2022, a prize which is given to the best player in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) every month.

As per the voting criteria, fans' votes count towards 50% of the vote share and experts' votes account for the remaining 50%. The forward has been chosen as per the fans’ votes between the period that started at 1 PM on January 6 and ended at 11 PM on January 8.

Guarrotxena was the first pick of the experts’ votes, accumulating 83.33% of their votes while ATK Mohun Bagan’s Vishal Kaith was the first pick of the fans’ votes, accumulating 33.10% of it.

Amassing a combined total of 51.05%, the Spaniard won the award by a wide margin, with Chennaiyin FC’s Petar Sliskovic coming second with 18.68%.

The 30-year-old scored the most goals for his club in December, finding himself on the scoresheet on three of the five occasions, including a brace against Jamshedpur FC that helped his side snatch a point from a losing position.

Ever since his addition to the Carlos Pena-coached side, Guarrotxena has added teeth to their attack, providing defence-splitting passes and making threatening runs into the box. He is also the joint-leading goalscorer for the Gaurs alongside striker Noah Sadaoui, netting five goals so far this season.

Guarrotxena is the third player to achieve this award this season. ATK Mohun Bagan’s Dimitri Petratos won it in October followed by Mumbai City FC’s Bipin Singh in November.
