Gouramangi Calls For Clarity, Clifford Wants Consistency As Former Teammates Look To Get Their Campaign Off To Winning Start
Margao: FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC renew one of the MG Indian Super League’s enduring rivalries when they meet at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Saturday, as both sides begin the new campaign with plenty to prove.
The high-stakes clash offers a fresh start as the League returns to a full home-and-away round-robin format. Both clubs have utilized the summer transfer window to reshape their squads.
Goa have welcomed back Jorge Ortiz, who previously enjoyed a successful spell with the Gaurs, alongside the arrivals of Spanish midfielder Álex Vallejo and winger Isak Vanlalruatfela. Ortiz’s return adds another attacking option to their frontline as they look to make home advantage count right out of the gate.
The hosts announced a new, yet familiar face in Gouramangi Singh at the helm and the young coach will want to hit all the right notes from the outset. “As a club, we want to stay true to our identity of being a competitive team. We want to play with a lot more clarity. We want to control games, and be comfortable with and without the ball. The boys are aware of what can hurt us on Saturday, but we are also prepared. If we can be better than Chennaiyin in more aspects of the game, then we can give ourselves a good chance to win.
Meanwhile, Chennaiyin FC - who finished a dismal 13th last season - have strengthened their Indian contingent with the additions of Ayush Dev Chhetri and Brison Fernandes, while also bringing in Glan Martins from Goa. Their return to Fatorda in Marina Machans’ colours adds another subplot to a fixture that has produced its share of memorable encounters over the years. Chennaiyin have also added French attacking midfielder Madih Talal and Brazilian forward Ramon Tanque, further bolstering their attacking options ahead of the new campaign.
The visitors' Head Coach - Clifford Miranda, is keeping the bigger picture firmly in mind. “Beating Goa won’t win us the league and losing to Goa won’t lose us the league. It’s about being consistent over the 24 games,” he said.
The battle will play out on the touchlines as much as it will on the pitch, with two former teammates turned coaches in Singh and Miranda, keen to showcase the tactical nous that they have honed as managers. That approach will be tested immediately against a Goa side that knows how to make home advantage count. The last meeting between these teams ended 1-1 in Chennai, with Sandesh Jhingan’s late header cancelling out Irfan Yadwad’s opener. Singh, however, chose to play down the run-in with Miranda. “Clifford and I have been teammates at the national team, and Dempo. But Saturday isn’t about Gouramangi and Clifford. It is about FC Goa and Chennaiyin - two very good teams and we’re going to get a competitive game.”
With new faces on both sides and several familiar ones facing their former club, Fatorda promises a fresh chapter in a rivalry that has rarely lacked intensity.
The game kicks off at 7:30 pm and will be broadcast live on YouTube, Sony Sports and SonyLIV.
