Renowned Italian defender Marco Materazzi arrived in India yesterday at Bengaluru to link up with the rest of the Chennaiyin FC squad ahead of the upcoming Hero Indian Super League (ISL) season. He was greeted by a big crowd outside at the airport, and the people did their best to ensure Materazzi immediately feels at home. Many Materazzi posters could be seen, and the new Chennaiyin FC recruit signed plenty of autographs to oblige the waiting fans.

Materazzi had a long and illustrious club career, mainly with Serie A giants Internazionale (Inter Milan), and played an instrumental role in Italy’s 2006 FIFA World Cup win. He has joined the Chennai-based ISL club, currently training in Bengaluru, in the dual role of player-manager.

The ISL starts on October 12, with Chennaiyin FC’s season kicking off with an away game against FC Goa on October 16. They will make their home debut at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium on October 15, against regional rivals Kerala Blasters FC.
