East Bengal opened up a five-point gap at the top of the Calcutta Football League 2015-16 (CFL) to tighten their grip on the trophy. Two comfortable wins of 4-1 and 3-1 against Police AC and SAI Darjeeling in the space of four days has added further impetus to the Red and Gold Brigade’s title charge. Mohammedan Sporting moved into second position after a narrow 1-0 win over Techno Aryan and a resounding 7-0 rout of BNR FC, while Hero I-League Champions Mohun Bagan continue to languish in the middle of the table with a 1-0 loss against Army XI and a 3-1 triumph over Tollygunge Agragami.Goals from Bikash Jairu (FC Pune City) and Mohammed Rafique, who scored the winner for Atlético de Kolkata in last year’s Hero Indian Super League final, helped East Bengal secure an easy 4-1 win while a Mehtab Hossain (Kerala Blasters) masterclass helped them overcome SAI Darjeeling after a Sheikh Asiruddin strike had drawn the underdogs level. An assist and a goal by Mehtab made it five wins on the bounce for Bengal who are looking for their sixth consecutive CFL title. Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan experienced their first loss of the season at the hands of Army XI before bouncing back against Tollygunge Agragami in a 3-1 victory courtesy of two goals from Dudu, the former FC Pune City star.Mohammedan Sporting wrapped up a good week for themselves with a rampant 7-0 win over relegation favourites BNR FC who look destined for the drop and are still searching for their first win of the season after nine games.
