Indian Super League (ISL) side East Bengal FC will square off against Diamond Harbour FC in the second semi-final of the Durand Cup at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata, on Wednesday.

The clash sets up an intriguing battle between two in form sides with East Bengal FC buoyed by their Kolkata Derby triumph and Diamond Harbour FC carrying the belief of a side that has already defied the odds.

The Red and Gold brigade sealed their place in the last four after an emphatic 2-1 win over arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the quarter-finals. The Mariners, unbeaten until that point and leaders of Group B, had looked the side to beat in the tournament but East Bengal FC produced a disciplined and clinical performance to avenge their defeat in the Durand Cup 2023 final. The victory has raised hopes that Oscar Bruzon’s men could go all the way this time and add another Durand Cup crown to their storied history.

Their road to the semi-finals was marked by dominance. East Bengal FC finished as Group A toppers with a perfect record, brushing aside South United FC 5-0, edging Namdhari FC 1-0 and dismantling Indian Air Force FT 6-1. The team has showcased balance across the pitch, a fluid attack complemented by a defence that has grown sturdier with every outing. With the derby win fresh in memory, confidence will be sky high heading into Wednesday’s fixture.

For Diamond Harbour FC, the journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Making their Durand Cup debut, the West Bengal club finished second in Group B behind MBSG but qualification came down to fine margins. Six points from three matches, including a 2-1 victory over Mohammedan Sporting Club and a commanding 8-1 rout of Border Security Force FT ensured they advanced on goal difference.

In the quarter-finals, the newcomers stunned Jamshedpur FC 2-0 at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far. Kibu Vicuna’s side will take the field against East Bengal FC with nothing to lose and everything to gain.

The winner of this tie will book a place in Saturday’s final, where they will face either Shillong Lajong FC or defending champions NorthEast United FC, who meet in the first semi-final. For East Bengal FC, it is about completing unfinished business from last season. For Diamond Harbour, it is about extending a dream run that has already shaken up everyone.
