ATK Mohun Bagan continue to spring surprises as, in another big signing ahead of the 2021-22 Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL), they secure the services of attacking midfielder Hugo Boumous on Thursday. Boumous, who played a pivotal role in Mumbai City FC’s trophy-winning campaign last season, is the sixth acquisition for the Mariners since their loss to the Islanders in the 2020-21 final in March earlier this year. He follows Liston Colaco, Amrinder Singh, Joni Kauko, Deepak Tangri and Ashutosh Mehta into the Kolkata-based team.

The 25-year-old, who played three seasons with FC Goa before joining Mumbai City FC ahead of the 2020-21 season, spoke to the ATKMB Media team from Greece and shared his thoughts on joining the Mariners. "I know Kolkata as the Mecca of Indian football. I am happy to sign with the city's traditional and successful club, ATK Mohun Bagan. I have heard that the joy of playing in front of millions of supporters of the Green-Maroon team in Yuba Bharati is different and I shall play this time to win [for] them,” he said.

"I am always hungry to win the trophy. I have brought success to the clubs that I have played for. And I shall keep this in mind as I play again. I will do my best to win. I am looking forward to seeing the passion and excitement of the Green Maroon supporters after winning the match. Sanjiv Goenka, the principal owner of the team, inspired me to come to Kolkata. I am grateful to him. My goal is to win the AFC Cup and the Hero Indian Super League.

“Both scoring goals and helping to score goals are equally rewarding. I get pleasure from both. Team’s victory is the main purpose. That is not possible without goals,” he added.

Head coach Antonio Lopez Habas, who has the AFC Cup challenge coming his way soon, welcomed the arrival of Boumous. "Hugo is a very fast and technically successful footballer. His personal skills are also very good. Hugo can create attacks as well as counterattacks. That is why he is so successful. With the arrival of Hugo, the strength of the team increased a lot," he said.
