Sunil Chhetri interview: Was important for us to show character
Bengaluru FC captain Sunil Chhetri shared his thoughts as the Blues edged past Chennaiyin FC with a 1-0 scoreline
Bengaluru FC captain Sunil Chhetri expressed delight to have led his team into the top six with a narrow 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC in Matchweek 14 of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 season at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
The high-voltage battle between the South Indian giants started with the Blues taking the game to their opposition’s box from the kick-off. Eventually, the Marina Machans regained their composure and fought back with their all making their way through the Bengaluru FC defence quite a few times. With nothing to separate the two sides, Australian forward Ryan Williams made the difference in the 62nd minute of the match with a beautiful finish from close range, wrapping up the game 1-0 for the home team.

With only their third win this season, Bengaluru FC have moved up to the sixth position on the league table. Captain Sunil Chhetri expressed his satisfaction at the result.
“Oh, it feels good man. I think in the last game, against Punjab FC, we started well but couldn’t keep the lead and we lost three points there. It wasn’t ideal so it was very important for us to come back and show character and get back, especially at home. It wasn’t easy, it was a task in hand against Chennaiyin FC, who were resilient but thankfully we won the three points,” stated Chhetri told indiansuperleague.com
Back in ISL 2022-23, the Blues had a poor start but eventually, they turned things around in their favour, winning their last eight league games, making it through to the playoffs and the final of the ISL Cup where they succumbed to Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
On being asked if they were aiming for a similar feat again this season, the 39-year-old said, “We would love to do that but it’s one win at a time. The message from the coaching staff and the head coach is very simple, just take one game at a time. You could see, it’s not easy. No matter who you are playing no matter where you are playing, so let’s take one game at a time and then see where we end up.”
