Dimitri Petratos, Jason Cummings, and Armando Sadiku put their names on the scoresheet as Mohun Bagan SG secured a convincing 3-0 victory against resurgent Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) on March 1.

This win has propelled the Mariners to the second spot, having secured 33 points in 16 matches.

After the match, Dimitri Petratos, Subhasish Bose, and Abhishek Suryavanshi opened up to indiansuperleague.com in an exclusive interview about the win and the challenges ahead.

Everybody's performance was really good: Dimitri Petratos

Aussie forward Petratos has been in stellar form for Mohun Bagan SG, scoring seven goals so far this season. He is playing an instrumental role in his team’s offensive line, helping the Mariners seal victories in important fixtures.

Petratos shared his pleasure with his team’s performance against Jamshedpur FC and believed that every player stepped up to produce a commanding performance against the Men of Steel.

“It was a good play that led us to the goal. We were ready from the beginning; we had a good few days to prepare for the match against Jamshedpur FC. The performance we did today (on Friday) was really good from everybody,” Petratos told indiansuperleague.com.

Manvir Singh was on top of his game as he created numerous openings for his teammates. With his quick feet and quick forward passes, the winger demonstrated a solid performance against Khalid Jamil’s team.

Sharing his delight at Singh’s performance, Petratos said,

“For sure, he (Manvir Singh) was very good. He provided two assists but was a bit unlucky not to put his name on the scoresheet.”

“It was a great performance for him, and all the boys combined well with each other. So, it’s good all around,” he added.

It’s the first time Petratos, Jason Cummings, and Armando Sadiku have netted goals for Mohun Bagan SG in a single game since joining the team. The forwards gelled up with each other, which resulted in a victory for the Kolkata-based club.

“This is perfect. All three front players got on the scoresheet; it does not matter who scored the first, second, or third. A goal is a goal. The most important thing is that it is a good boost for everybody,” he commented.

The Mariners will now face their arch-rivals East Bengal FC in their next fixture in the ISL, which is scheduled to take place on March 10. Petratos has his eyes fixed on securing another victory against the Red and Gold Brigade in front of their numerous supporters.

“The Derby is always a good game to play,” he shared.

“The fans turn up in good numbers, which is very good for us. Now, we just have to recover and focus on that game (against East Bengal FC) to get three points,” he signed off.

We are playing compactly under Habas: Subhasish Bose

Full-back Subhasish Bose has also played a crucial role in the defence line, leading the team from the back and helping them keep their sixth clean sheet in the ISL 2023–24 season.

“As a team, we played well on the pitch. Everyone gave their 100%. We were able to substantiate our game plan,” Bose asserted after the match.

“Manvir Singh played brilliantly through the flanks. We created numerous chances tonight (against Jamshedpur FC). In the Odisha FC match, we failed to convert our chances. Against Jamshedpur FC, we were able to convert our chances, which helped us get all three points,” he continued.

Despite making a resounding start to this season, the Mariners faced three successive defeats. Since then, with the re-appointment of Antonio Lopez Habas as their head coach, Mohun Bagan SG have regained their form and have been performing at a high level.

Speaking in context, he said,

“Under head coach Habas, we are playing compactly. We attack as a team; we defend as a team, which means we are playing as a team. That’s the main reason behind our recent performances.”

Bose opined that scoring goals just before the Kolkata Derby will boost his forwards’ confidence and motivate them to do well in the high-voltage fixture.

He opined, “Strikers always want to score goals. Scoring goals will give them confidence and boost their (Petratos, Cummings, and Sadiku's) morale. This win will push us before going into the derby."

“Every point is important for us. We are still in the race for the ISL League Shield. Derby is an important game for the Kolkata supporters. We will go for three points against East Bengal FC to go to the top spot,” he continued.

Bose had words of praise for their young midfielder, Abhishek Suryavanshi.

"Suryavanshi has performed well in the recent Kalinga Super Cup and has been getting valuable game time in the ISL. Applauding his 22-year-old footballer, he said,

“He (Abhishek Suryavanshi) played really well in the Kalinga Super Cup. The coach is also giving him chances to play in the ISL.”

“He is a quality player and also very aggressive. I hope he continues to perform well and will become important for our midfield. I also wish him to see him represent our national team,” he concluded.

Our aim is to win the ISL League Shield: Abhishek Suryavanshi

The Maharashtra-born central midfielder has also fixed his eyes on securing the ISL League Shield with Mohun Bagan SG. However, he wants to take one game at a time to chase their dream.

“Our aim is to win the ISL League Shield. We are focusing on one game at a time. I am trying to give my best whenever I get game time. Our main focus is to secure the win for our team,” he mentioned.

Suryavanshi sees this as a great opportunity to play alongside established midfielders like Anirudh Thapa and Joni Kauko. Speaking in context, he shared,

“I am getting a lot of experience from these players (Thapa, Kauko). It’s a great opportunity for me; I am learning a lot from them.”
