With the scores locked at 1-1 in a tightly-contested ‘South Indian derby’ in Chennai, both Chennaiyin FC and Kerala Blasters FC were pushing to grab the winner. French international Bernard Mendy, who has quickly become a stalwart of the Chennaiyin side, not only delivered the three points for his team but also scored one of the goals of the tournament. A stunning bicycle kick from the centre back granted Chennaiyin the victory in their first home game and sent them to second in the league table. When www.indiansuperleague.com caught up with Mendy for an exclusive post-game interview, the Frenchman modestly downplayed his starring role in the team’s win, instead emphasising the importance of collecting three points and focusing on the collective achievement of the team’s derby win. Here’s what Mendy had to say:You scored a fabulous goal to secure the win for your team. What are your thoughts? The main task was to get the three points for the team. The team fought hard to secure the win. You have scored many goals in the past. How do you rate this goal? I'm happy with my contribution to the team and more importantly the team picked up 3 points which is the most important thing. What is your message to the fans of Chennaiyin FC? This is our first home game and we are happy to start with the win. Thank them for their support and hopefully we will take our form to the next game.
