High-flying Chennaiyin FC take on bottom placed Delhi Dynamos FC in Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2017-18 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. Despite Chennaiyin having a poor record against Delhi historically, goalkeeper Karanjit Singh is confident about their chances of a win in their first meeting of the ongoing season. The Indian custodian spoke to indiansuperleague.com in an exclusive interview before the game against Delhi. Here are the excerpts.

This is your third season with Chennaiyin FC – is it fair to call Chennai your second home now?

Yeah because more than with my family, I spend time here. You can call this my second home.

So far you have four clean sheets – what are your personal targets for the season?

Mostly, we have targets as a team. First, we need to qualify for the semi-finals. We are giving our 100% for that. About clean sheets, as a team, as a goalkeeper you get more confidence when you get those. You have a lot of responsibility and that clean sheet gives you confidence.

Is there healthy competition for places in the team?

Of course. I want to say thanks to my goalkeeping coach and my colleagues. When we give 100% and they also give 100%, they push me to bring out the best. Between us, every day, every training session, there is competition. We are three goalkeepers and we give each other good competition.

Chennai does not have a great record against Delhi – how do you rate your chances against them considering that they’re struggling this season?

I don’t think they’re a bad team. They’re struggling a bit but individually they are good. It’s going to be the same like we played against Bengaluru, against Pune, against Jamshedpur, it’s the same responsibility and we’re not taking it easy.

A goalkeeper needs to be more reactive and responsive than instinctive – so tell us how hard is it for you to overcome early jitters in the league?

No, I think the goalkeeping position is a very responsible and difficult position. You need to be switched on at all times. So every time we need to be ready. It is tough for everyone and it is the same for goalkeepers. We have to be ready for that.

On a fun note, what are your superstitions?

I don’t have anything like that. I trust in God and pray for every match. So for me it is to pray.

Any message for the fans?

I want to say thanks for coming for every match and I want to call them for every match because they give us a boost, they give us energy and they are the twelfth man for us. Come and support us till the last match.
