Jerry: Want to thank the coach for putting his trust in me
Young winger Jerry Mawihmingthanga was adjudged Hero of the Match after a goal and two assists in the game. While speaking to indiansuperleague.com after the match, the 22-year-old thanked Odisha’s coaching staff for their confidence in him. Here are some excerpts from the interview.
Hi Jerry, congratulations on a brilliant game. Talk us through the entire match.
Firstly, I want to thank god that finally we have a win. We worked hard, learnt from our mistakes and now we have a win. Now we must keep this momentum going so I’m very happy. A big thank you to the whole coaching staff and all the players who have put their trust in me. I really appreciate it.
The last game against Jamshedpur was slightly disappointing. This game, your team scored four goals. How do you think the season is shaping up for you?
It’s lucky that we got to learn in the first place. We learnt from our mistakes and we have to develop more and keep this going.
Personally, it was a brilliant performance for you tonight. What have you done to improve your game over the last few seasons?
Firstly, I want to thank the coach for putting his trust in me. When someone believes in you even if you make mistakes and instead of shouting at you, he gives you motivation, that’s when you start to build the confidence. When you know someone is putting their trust in you, you must be confident and do the job. I really would like to thank the coaching staff and the backroom staff. They really give me motivation and confidence.
Any messages for the Odisha fans before you play your first ever home game?
We’re very excited to play in Odisha and I want to ask every fan to come and support us and we will do it together.
Meanwhile, Mumbai City FC midfielder Raynier Fernandes gave his views on their loss.
Hi Raynier, tough game tonight. Talk us through what happened.
Unfortunately, we lost tonight but football is a game of winning and losing. In the first half we made quite a few mistakes and conceded goals. But then we must look forward now.
The first half was very different from the second half. What happened in the first half that you changed in the second?
We had a plan which we could not execute in the first half. So, we lacked that, and we conceded goals. In the second half, we tried to fight back but it wasn’t enough.
After two successive clean sheets, what was different tonight?
First two games we did good. We had one win and a draw. But today wasn’t our day, I can say that. We have to really work hard now. We don’t have to think about this game in the upcoming matches and we are going to work hard in training now, rectify our mistakes and we should be back stronger.
How do you see the season shaping up from here and how will you bounce back?
We did quite well throughout the game I can say, but then again, I have to say that whatever mistakes we made in the first half we got to rectify that, and we got to come with a stronger plan. I think our season can go well, if we go according to our plans.
