Defending champions Chennaiyin FC suffered their third consecutive loss on the trot with a 4-3 loss to NorthEast United at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday. Chennaiyin had initially held the lead thanks to an own goal from Rowllin Borges and a brace from Thoi Singh. However, a hat-trick from Bartholomew Ogbeche and a second half winner from Borges proved to be the difference.
After the match, veteran Inigo Calderon spoke to indiansuperleague.com on what went wrong and the measures his team need to take to overcome their bad spell. Here are the excerpts:
What went wrong for Chennaiyin FC tonight?
I don't know. We conceded goals too easily maybe. It's about the whole team, not one or two persons or the back four. You have to switch on and be better because it's not easy to score goals. We were in front of them in the game and we conceded silly goals, I think. We have much to improve. At the moment it is not going with us. I don't believe in luck but at present, it is not with us. In football there are no miracles, it is just about working, so, tomorrow we decide to rest and get ready for the next game.
What went wrong in the defence?
Yeah, I know but now is too soon to speak. We prefer to watch the game again because when you are playing it is not like you can see things so clearly so, I don’t want to see the goals, I want to see the whole game, and we must learn because we have zero points on the table. It’s true, it’s just the beginning sometimes you lose three games in a row during the season, it’s not that bad.
On picking themselves up from here.
We win. We win for sure. I know the team, I know the players we have, they are big characters. So, it’s not going to be any problem, I don’t have any doubt about that. I know for sure that we will improve and grab the points.
