Atlético de Kolkata marquee player Luis García had missed the previous two games due to an injury, but was back for the crunch clash against Chennaiyin FC today. The matchup between the top two teams in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) standings did not disappoint, with an incident-packed fixture seeing second-placed Chennaiyin scoring a late equaliser to earn a draw with the league leaders. There were plenty of talking points in the game, as García himself mentioned, with two red cards and two penalties – one of each for both teams. García’s first-half penalty gave Kolkata the lead, and it was the Spaniard’s first ISL goal. In an exclusive post-match interview with www.indiansuperleague.com, the former Liverpool player shared his thoughts on the action-packed game, as well as his goal and the adulation he still receives from Liverpool fans even here in India. What are your thoughts on the game?I think it was a very good game, although it was impacted by the sending off of two players. It’s very difficult playing in these conditions and the referee has to think about these things. What’s the road ahead for Atlético de Kolkata? It’s a well-deserved point. It’s difficult to play here because Chennai is such a great team. It was very difficult to win the game entirely. We’re happy that we got the point but we’re disappointed because we were so close to victory.Did the quality of the pitch and the lack of practice affect the team? No, the pitch was okay. It was a bit hard, but we’re a football team, so it’s no excuse. Can you reflect on the goal you scored today?Well, it was a penalty, so I’m just happy that it went in!What do you have to say to the Liverpool fans who have come to see you? It’s a ‘big Red family’ so they’re everywhere! I found them in Kolkata and in Goa, too. It’s just a big family and I hope they keep supporting us!
