The reigning champions Mumbai City FC have powered through the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2021-22 season with some excellent performances as the fans witnessed some jaw-dropping goals and spectacular individual performances.

Under the guidance of new head coach Des Buckingham, the Islanders have added new elements to former coach Sergio Lobera’s attacking brand of football, with Buckingham closing the gaps and adding his own touch to the team in order to defend the title.

Mumbai City FC's 2021 in numbers: Pl:24, W:13, D:6, L:5, Win%: 54.16

Buckingham’s side have been carried on from where they left off last season, as they sit on top of the table with 16 points, winning five games out of eight while drawing one and losing two, boasting a 62.5% winning rate this season. Mumbai City FC won more than 50% of their matches in 2021.

The high: Mumbai City FC created history as they became the first team to do the League Winners’ Shield and Hero ISL title double in the 2020-21 season. That has to be the best moment of 2021 for the Islanders.

The low: However, the Islanders didn't have too many low points in 2021 but their 3-0 defeat to Kerala Blasters FC this season would have hurt their pride. It was the only game where Mumbai City FC failed to register a single goal in all the eight games that they have played this season.

Best Player: Out of all star players, Ahmed Jahouh stands out as the scintillating player for Mumbai City FC in 2021. Jahouh had the most touches of any players in the league while he has also provided the most assists in the league (5) in eight games this season. He has been the heartbeat of the side that has simply been unstoppable in 2021.

What to expect in 2022: With a high quality squad at their disposal who know how to win the big moments, the Islanders would aim for nothing less than retaining the League Winners’ Shield and the championship title in 2022.
