The Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23 season witnessed the Indian players taking the centre stage with their impressive performances, particularly in terms of scoring goals. It was so heartening to see the Indian players break the shackles and make a name for themselves by contributing significantly to the attack.

This season we saw a remarkable surge in the number of goals scored by Indian attackers, who accounted for 121 out of the total 345 goals scored in the league, setting a new Hero ISL record.

Local players have stepped up and played a decisive role in changing the course of matches. The significant rise of these homegrown talents not only added depth to the teams, but also increased the belief of their head coaches.

With that, we take a look at the top Indian goalscorers from the Hero ISL 2022-23 season.

1. Lallianzuala Chhangte (Mumbai City FC) – 10 goals in 22 games

Chhange was undoubtedly one of the most improved Indian attackers this season. He was a dynamic force for the Islanders throughout the season, displaying his high speed on the field, dribbling skills, and attacking prowess under the stewardship of Des Buckingham.

The 25-year-old had an outstanding season and truly shone in terms of goal contribution by clocking a goal conversation rate of 20%. Chhangte was awarded the Hero of the League award after a remarkable season that featured 10 goals and six assists, making him only the second Indian to earn this accolade.

He also joined the elite company of Sunil Chhetri as the second Indian player to score ten or more goals in a single Hero ISL season.

2. Bipin Singh (Mumbai City FC) – 7 goals in 22 games

Mumbai City FC had a memorable Hero ISL campaign which saw them clinching their second League Winners' Shield. Every player stepped up to the occasion for the Islanders and delivered their best on the pitch. Notably, the two Indian wingers - Bipin Singh and Chhangte - played a significant role in the team's success.

Singh is second on the list with seven goals from 22 appearances, marking his best-ever season in terms of scoring goals. His tactical skills and eye for the goal have made him one of the best-attacking wingers in the league in the last couple of seasons.

The 28-year-old proved to be a great carrier of the ball, striking up a prolific partnership with Jorge Pereyra Diaz, Greg Stewart and Chhangte in the attack.

=3. Sivasakthi Narayanan (Bengaluru FC) – 6 goals in 21 games

Bengaluru FC made a remarkable comeback in the Hero ISL 2022-23 season, and it would not have been possible if not for Sivasakthi Narayanan. He played a pivotal role up front for the Blues, especially when skipper Chhetri struggled to make an impact on the pitch.

The youngster accompanied Roy Krishna and proved that he certainly knows his way to the back of the net, thus becoming a key cog in Bengaluru FC’s resurgence in the second half of the season.

The 21-year-old had his breakthrough season, netting six goals in 21 games. Sivasakthi was honoured with the Hero Emerging Player of the League award, which was a testament to his impressive outings during the 2022-23 season.

=3. Ritwik Das (Jamshedpur FC) – 6 goals in 18 games

Ritwik Das burst onto the scene last season, proving his worth at Jamshedpur FC as they lifted the League Winners' Shield under Owen Coyle.

The Men of Steel had an underwhelming season, but Das remained one of their shining stars. While he struggled to match his previous season's form at the beginning of the current season, the Kolkata-born forward rediscovered his spark as the season progressed.

The winger boasts quick feet and a keen eye for goal. He enjoyed a steady climb through the ranks of Jamshedpur FC and truly went from strength to strength in the current campaign, which also earned him a place in the national team.

The 26-year-old netted six goals in 18 appearances for the Men of Steel this term.

=3. Nandhakumar Sekar (Odisha FC) – 6 goals in 20 games

Sekar is another winger-forward who made it to the list. The 27-year-old seemed to be hitting the form of his life with his goal-scoring prowess.

Sekar displayed his ability to take on defenders as well as to shoot from a distance. He popped up at crucial times for his side and turned the outcome of the game in their favor.

The winger played an integral role in Odisha FC’s first-ever playoff qualification, eventually falling short of making the semi-finals after a 2-0 defeat against ATK Mohun Bagan. Sekar ended the 2022-23 Hero ISL season with six goals to his name from 20 appearances and had a conversion rate of 14%.
