FC Pune City will fight tomorrow to claim the coveted pole position in the Hero Indian Super League when we play against Chennaiyin FC tomorrow. Chennaiyin FC is a point ahead of us, having played the same number of matches. The confidence for the boys could not have been on a higher note, as we return home after an emphatic 3-1 win over Atletico De Kolkata. The injury to ace midfielder John Goossens is unfortunate, especially looking at the immediate impact he has made.Chennaiyin FC have drawn their previous two matches, after routing Mumbai FC 5-1 and is in good form, thanks to their Golden Boot contender Elano and Italian World Cup winner Marco Materazzi. While our forwards have the job of getting past Marco, who better than the experienced Greek captain Kostas Katsouranis to shoulder the responsibility of keeping the Brazilian Elano in check. Along with him, Lenny Rodrigues has done wonderfully in the tournament, making runs and defensive tackles throughout the pitch. Whether Franco Colomba will stick to the fleet footed Lenny or go for a more robust and defence minded option in Mehrajuddin Wadoo for the match against Chennai, remains to be seen.Another newcomer who has wowed all with his skills, is coach’s son, Davide Colomba. Running tirelessly on the left flank, Davide notched up one assist and a goal in the previous match! It was his inch perfect cross that met Dudu Omagbemi’s header to give us the lead against Atletico De Kolkata.Franco Colomba seems to have ironed out most of the initial hiccups in the team, with the midfield emerging stronger and more confident than ever. Kostas Katsouranis has been a revelation in the midfield, with important tackles and headache to the defenders with his attack minded runs. The defence has been well shouldered by Bruno Cirillo and Daniele Magliochetti, with the Indian players providing ample support. The biggest attraction for tomorrow, apart from the host of celebrities in attendance, will be the new signing Jermaine Pennant. The midfielder has made over 50 appearances for Liverpool, most notably in their run to the 2007 UEFA Champions League Final. With a lot of firepower in both sides, high momentum and many stars watching from the stands, it is fair to say that this is a blockbuster in the making!
