Mohammedan Sporting Club is set to make their debut in the Indian Super League (ISL) as the latest addition to the league. Their promotion adds more matches and heightens the competition, bringing added excitement to the ISL.

Having clinched the I-League title during the 2023-24 season, Mohammedan SC is the second team to secure their place in the ISL, achieving this milestone with a game to spare last season.

The move to the ISL presents a significant challenge for Mohammedan SC, who will also rekindle their fierce rivalry with Kolkata neighbours Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC. The team will be eager to rise to the occasion and make an immediate impression, aiming to replicate the impressive debut of Punjab FC last season and take their performance even further.

Team composition and transfer dealings

Mohammedan SC faces a significant transition as they bid farewell to key players Eddie Hernandez and David Lalhansanga, who were pivotal last season. Hernandez, their top scorer in the I-League, and Lalhansanga, the leading Indian goal-scorer, will be missed.

Despite these losses, the club has bolstered their squad with intriguing new signings. Forward Cesar Manzoki, who joins from the UAE Pro League, is a standout addition. The 27-year-old has also showcased his talent in the CAF Champions League and the Chinese Super League.

In addition, Indian talents like Gaurav Bora, Amarjit Kiyam, and Rochharzela, each with ISL experience, are expected to make a significant impact and establish themselves in the league.

Key Players

Padam Chettri

Chettri was named the best goalkeeper of the I-League last season and was crucial in anchoring the team’s formidable defence. In addition to his impressive record of eight clean sheets, he made plenty of crucial saves. As the new season begins, Chhetri is anticipated to retain his position as the first-choice keeper, despite the arrival of new additions like Nikhil Deka and Bhaskar Roy.

Alexis Gomez

The Argentine is an expressive player known for both scoring goals and creating chances. His proficiency with set-piece deliveries adds another layer to his game. Gomez was one of the team's key players last season, leading the squad in assists. At 26, he still has much to prove and continues to be a pivotal figure.

Head coach

Andrey Chernyshov has worked with notable clubs such as FC Spartak Moscow and FC Dinamo Tbilisi in the past. He has also managed the Russian U-21 team and has served as assistant manager for the Russian national team. During his professional club career, he played as a centre-back for clubs such as Dynamo Moscow and Belgian side Royal Antwerp FC.

A hallmark of Cherneyshov’s Mohammedan SC team is their disciplined and resilient defensive setup, which makes them difficult to break down. This was particularly evident in the I-League last season, where Mohammedan SC conceded the fewest goals in the league. Set-pieces also play a crucial role in the Russian tactician's strategy, with MSC boasting tall and physical players who present a significant aerial threat.
