The Islanders ended the 2022-23 campaign with 46 points, which is the highest-ever points tally achieved in a single season. They reached that mark with an emphatic 5-3 win over FC Goa in their 18th game of the season, a win that broke Jamshedpur FC’s record of 43 points set in the 2021-22 season.

First team to win the Hero ISL Shield twice (2020-21 and 2022-23)

Mumbai City FC became the first club to win the Hero ISL League Winners’ Shield twice. They secured the Shield after beating FC Goa in their 18th game of the season. During the Hero ISL 2020-21 season, the Islanders lifted their maiden League Winners’ Shield after finishing on top of the league phase with 40 points from 20 games.

Most goals in a single season (54)

MCFC have made it a habit of scoring goals under Des Buckingham. This season they took their goal tally to 54 which is the most any club has ever scored in a single Hero ISL season. They beat the previous record of FC Goa’s 51 goals in the 2019-20 season.

Longest winning streak (11 games)

Buckingham’s men set a new record for the longest winning streak in the league with a 2-1 victory against Jamshedpur FC on January 27, 2023. This was their 11th win in a row, a sequence that started with a 6-2 against Chennaiyin FC on November 12, 2022. Their 11-game winning run ended after a 1-1 draw against Hyderabad FC.

Longest unbeaten streak in Hero ISL (18 games)

The 18-match unbeaten run that the Islanders enjoyed between a thrilling 3-3 draw against Hyderabad FC on October 9, 2022 and the 5-3 win over FC Goa on February 11, 2023, is the longest unbeaten streak in Hero ISL history. Bengaluru FC crushed their dream of going unbeaten the entire league with a breathtaking 2-1 victory. Good luck to any team trying to break this record in a single campaign.

Most number of goals in successive games (28)

Mumbai City FC set a new record of finding the back of the net in 28 successive Hero ISL games, beating the previous high of 14 successive games by Chennaiyin FC (2015 to 2016), NorthEast United FC (2015 to 2016), Delhi Dynamos FC (2017-18 to 2018-19), and Kerala Blasters FC (2017 to 2018). The Islanders had scored in every game except for the last game against East Bengal FC where the Kolkata side halted their scoring juggernaut and became the first team to keep a clean sheet against the league winners this season.

Most goals by Indian players (25)

The domestic front of Mumbai City FC too set a new record in their phenomenal campaign. Their Indian players scored the most number of goals in a single Hero ISL season. Lallianzuala Chhangte (10), Bipin Singh (6), Lalengmawia Ralte (3), Vinit Rai (2), Vikram Partap Singh (2), Vignesh Dakshinamurthy (1), and Mehtab Singh (1) together scored 25 goals for the Islanders, which accounts to 46% of the total goals scored by them this season. This indicated that the squad doesn’t rely only on foreign players for goals.

Most away wins for a team in a single season (8)

The Islanders won eight of their 10 away games this season and became the first team to achieve this feat in the Hero ISL having surpassed Bengaluru FC’s record of seven wins set in the 2017-18 season.

The Shield winners also recorded the outright longest consecutive away wins under Buckingham. The 5-3 victory against FC Goa was also the Islanders eighth away win in a row, a run that started on October 28, 2022 with a 2-0 win over Kerala Blasters FC.

During their second League Winners’ Shield triumph, the Islanders set another goal-scoring record in the process. They scored 30 goals in away games, which is the most by a team in a season. Surprisingly, they scored more goals in away games (30) than in home games (24) this season.

Mumbai City FC’s tally of 28 goals in the first half is the most number of goals scored by a team in the first half of games in a single campaign.

First team to top the league table at the end of the season thrice

Mumbai City FC topped the Hero ISL 2022-23 league table with 46 points from 20 games. No stranger to the pole position, the Islanders became the first Indian side to finish on top of the league at the end of the season on three different occasions. Previously, they finished on top of the league phase in 2020-21 with 40 points from 20 games and in 2016 with 23 points from 14 games.

Earliest to win the ISL League Winners’ Shield

Buckingham’s men secured the Hero ISL League Winners’ Shield with two matches to go, becoming the quickest League Shield winners in terms of matches remaining for a club in the league.

Most wins in the league stage of the season (14)

The 5-3 victory over the Gaurs was Mumbai City FC’s 14th win of the campaign. They became the first team to win 14 matches in the league stage of a single Hero ISL season, breaking the record of 13 wins, held jointly by Jamshedpur FC (2021-22) and Bengaluru FC (2017-18).

Best goal difference (+33)

Mumbai City FC’s staggering goal difference of +33 is miles ahead of the previous best record set by FC Goa in the 2019-20 season, who finished with a goal difference of +23. The Islanders scored a whopping 54 goals and conceded only 21.

Besides setting up an extraordinary figure of 15 new Hero ISL records, Mumbai City FC have also equalled two more records this season.

Most wins in a season (14)

Mumbai City FC have now equalled Bengaluru FC for the most wins by a team in an entire season of the Hero ISL. The Islanders could set a new record with another win in the semi-finals to surpass the Blues who achieved this feat under then head coach Albert Roca in the 2017-18 season.

Fewest losses in a season (2)

Jose Molina’s ATK FC in 2016 recorded the fewest losses in a season (2). Buckingham’s Mumbai City FC have also suffered two defeats in the Hero ISL 2022-23 campaign.

First team to win both the Hero ISL title and Hero ISL Shield twice

Having previously won the historic Hero ISL double (the League Winners’ Shield and the Hero ISL champions trophy) in the 2020-21 season, the Islanders can become the maiden team in the history of the league to clinch the coveted accolade twice.
