Unlike most Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) clubs, two-time champions Chennaiyin FC have been subdued in the summer window so far. John Gregory’s men finished at the bottom of the table in the 2018-19 season and were recently knocked out of the AFC Cup as well, but that hasn’t affected their outlook on the quality and depth of the squad.

The 31-year-old Lithuanian international, Nerijus Valskis remains their only foreign buy this summer. The versatile forward played for clubs in Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia, Romania, Poland, Thailand and Israel before making the switch to the south-coast club. Also, he recently took part in Lithuania’s UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers against Luxembourg and Serbia, meaning he is no stranger to the big stage.

‘Nerka’ shared his excitement on the move to Chennai and thanked the fans for the humbling reception. He said, “I am very excited to take up this new challenge in a new country. I have never been to India before this, but I am really looking forward to it and I want to give my best for the fans, my teammates and the club. Thank you for all your love and support. See you at the Marina Arena!”.

Valskis also acknowledged the role Gregory played in his move to India and shared, “I have had some great conversations with the head coach. He said he admires my playing style and my qualities. And for me, it is a fantastic opportunity to learn and improve under an experienced coach like John.”

The Lithuanian finished by promising the supporters his 100% ahead of the next season. “I always look forward to new challenges. My journey so far with the many clubs I have played at has been great. But I am only looking ahead along with Chennaiyin. And my objective is to help Chennaiyin taste success again. When I step out on the pitch, I will give my everything for the team, and it will not just be through scoring goals,” he stated.
