Brazilian defender Gerson Vieira has joined Hero Indian Super League side ATK from Japanese team Renofa Yamaguchi FC. The 25-year-old will join the likes of foreigners such as John Johnson, Kalu Uche and Manuel Lanzarote at the club for the 2018-19 season.

Vieira was first introduced to Indian football when he joined Mumbai City FC during the 2016 season. He quickly established himself as one of the stand-out players for the club, making a total of 14 appearances in his debut season. Vieira also chipped in with a goal as Mumbai reached the semi-finals of the 2016 campaign.

The defender continued from where he left off for the following season, registering 17 appearances throughout the entire season. Although the Islanders suffered much disappointment, Vieira managed to deliver some fine individual performances on the pitch. Alongside Lucian Goian at the back, Vieira was part of one of the most robust defences in the league. The Brazilian was especially known for his composure on the ball as well his presence of mind when dealing with forwards. Over the course of two years, Vieira racked up 81 tackles, 97 interceptions and 44 blocks for Mumbai City FC.

ATK have been one of the busiest teams during the summer transfer window, completing a host of high-profile signings. With Steve Coppell at the helm, Vieira will be able to take his defensive qualities to the next level and deliver more success for the two-time champions.
