Chennaiyin FC’s Jeje Lalpekhlua has carried his magnificent Hero Indian Super League 2015 form into the Hero I-League and the Asian Football Confederation Cup with Mohun Bagan. The 25-year-old, who was the top-scoring Indian from open play in Hero ISL 2015 with six goals to his name, is closing in on another personal accolade as he looks to better former Mumbai City FC midfielder Lalrindika Ralte’s record of four goals in a single season of continental competitions. The Mizoram striker, who won both, the Hero I-League and Hero ISL last year and then the SAFF Cup early this year, has netted once in Mohun Bagan’s historic triumph against Tampines Rovers in the Asian Champions League (ACL) play-off, twice against Maldivian outfit Maziya in the AFC Cup and once against South China AA in his team’s 4-0 humbling of the Hong Kong-based side in the AFC Cup.With three goals in the AFC Cup, Jeje is now one short of equalling legendry Indian frontman Baichung Bhutia’s tally of four goals in the competition. Ralte’s four goals also came in the AFC Cup.Mohun Bagan play Myanmar’s Yangon United FC on March 16, and if Jeje scores two goals, he will go level with Mumbai City FC striker Sunil Chhetri on five goals, an Indian record in the AFC Cup. However, Chhetri can keep Jeje at bay as he will also be in action on March 16 in Bengaluru FC’s AFC Cup tie against Burmese side Ayeyawady United.
