New SC East Bengal head coach Manolo Diaz stressed that he wants to build a balanced side ahead of the Hero Indian Super League 2021-22 season that is efficient at both ends of the pitch.

Diaz was appointed SC East Bengal’s coach in September, replacing Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler. The Red & Golds, who made their bow in the Hero ISL last season, finished ninth on the points table with 17 points, securing just three wins.

SC East Bengal's supporters will be hoping for a better show this time around given the reputation that Diaz brings. The Spaniard comes with 20 years of coaching experience, having also spent a large amount working with Real Madrid's youth teams.

"We look to build a balanced team," Diaz said in a virtual press conference on Monday. "We want a team that works in attack and defense, collectively. At the same time, we are building a strong, aggressive and optimistic team and we want to improve the level of every player."

When asked to speak about his preferred formation, the Spaniard expressed that his side will need to be flexible.

"We want to win every match," Diaz stated. "The formation will depend on the opponents and we will need to adapt to different situations before and during the match."

The 53-year-old, who has managed in over 300 matches, said he had offers to stay back in his home country but the opportunity to pursue a fresh challenge abroad brought him to India.

"I decided to come here because East Bengal is a big club in India," Diaz revealed. "I had opportunities to continue (working) in Spain but I wanted a new challenge abroad. I decided to take up this opportunity given the history East Bengal has."

Stating his views about the Hero ISL, Diaz said he was aware of the development of the league and the Spaniard was eager to leave a mark. "We know that many Spanish players and coaches have worked here, in the Hero ISL," Diaz said. "My perception of the league is that it is developing. I want to help in the development of the Indian players and also (improve) the level of the league."
