Mumbai City FC have agreed on a one-year contract extension with star striker, Modou Sougou. The announcement, which came on Tuesday, will be greeted with a lot of cheers from the Islanders fans, as the Senegalese was one of the standout performers last term, greatly helping the west-coast club make it through to the semifinals of the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2018-19 campaign.

The 34-year-old made his debut against Jamshedpur FC in Mumbai’s opener last season, following which he scored his first club goal in the Maharashtra Derby in mid-October. From there on, the floodgates opened, and the striker kept finding the back of the net at regular intervals. Sougou also went on to record the Hero ISL’s first-ever four-goal haul, as the Islanders thrashed Kerala Blasters 6-1.

He finished the campaign with 12 goals from 18 matches – the joint second-highest. While it wasn’t enough to see Jorge Costa’s men lift the crown, Sougou’s exhibition of classic centre-forward play earned praise from all corners of the country, many of whom included youngsters still learning their trade. He combined pace, power and vigilance to torment the league’s defenders, playing on their shoulder and making them run in channels they weren’t comfortable in.

Before his Indian adventure, Sougou represented Portugal’s top division outfit, Moreirense FC where he was on loan from English club, Sheffield Wednesday. The forward operated under Costa’s guardianship in the 2011-12 season playing for Romanian outfit, CFR Cluj. The other list of clubs represented by Sougou includes Marseille, U.D. Leiria and Académica.
