Kerala Blasters FC have announced the signing of Bhutanese striker Chencho Gyeltshen ahead of the 2021-22 Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL).

“Deal done! I am very delighted to share this with you all that joining Kerala Blasters FC is one of my wishes [that has] come true. I can’t wait to join the Yellow Army and play in front of all the fans,” he wrote on Twitter.

The 25-year-old, affectionately nicknamed the Cristiano Ronaldo of Bhutan because of his style of play, has played a lot of football in India in the past, including for 2018-19 Hero ISL champions Bengaluru FC. He appeared in nine games for the Blues that season and contributed two goals.

Prior to that he also represented Minerva Punjab and played a big role in their winning the 2017-18 Hero I-League. He scored seven goals for the northern side.  

The Bhutanese international has also plied his trade for quite a few clubs in Thailand and Chittagong Abahani in Bangladesh.

Chencho is the eighth signing at Kerala Blasters FC since finishing 10th in the 2020-21 Hero ISL. He follows Hormipam Ruivah, Sanjeev Stalin, Vincy Barretto, Harmanjot Khabra, Adrian Luna, Enes Sipovic and Jorge Pereyra Diaz into the team.

Kerala Blasters FC started their pre-season on July 30 last month shortly after bringing on board Ivan Vukomanovic as their new head coach. In a first for the club, they will also be featuring in the 130th edition of the Durand Cup – Asia’s oldest football tournament – which will run from September 5 to October 3.
