FC Goa have brought in head coach Juan Ferrando ahead of the upcoming season to compete for their maiden Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) trophy as well as the 2021 AFC Champions League. The club's latest defensive signing Ivan Gonzalez believes that Ferrando is the ‘perfect coach’ for the Gaurs.

I played with him (Juan Ferrando) only for two weeks (at Cultural Leonesa). I knew from my team-mates that he loves to play attacking football. So I think he is the perfect coach for Goa's style of attacking football,” the Spanish defender said in an interview with Goal.com.

The Spanish head coach has brought in a number of attacking reinforcements to contend for the Hero ISL trophy, and Gonzalez believes that Ferrando’s attacking philosophy will benefit the team greatly. “We can improve defensively but FC Goa's style is to attack. Defence is important but we love to attack. We can score more goals than other teams,” Gonzalez explained.

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old defender shared his excitement at the prospect of playing outside Spain for the first time in his career, “For the first time, I am moving out of my country. I would like to take up this challenge. I knew that I would like to play out of my country. My wife and my family love Asia and when Goa called me, I felt that this is the destiny for me.”

Having secured the Hero ISL 2019-20 League Winner’s Shield, FC Goa will be competing in the AFC Champions League group stages as well. Gonzalez admitted that the chance to represent the Gaurs at a continental level influenced his decision to move to India.

“FC Goa is the first team from India to play in the AFC Champions League and are the Hero ISL shield winners. For me, it is a great opportunity. I wanted to be there and play in Goa. A lot of players who played there only had good things to say about the city," Gonzalez concluded.
