Former India footballer and one of India’s most skilled coaches, Subhash Bhowmick, died in Kolkata at the age of 72.

Bhowmick, popularly known as ‘Bhombolda’ helped East Bengal win the Calcutta League in 1973, 1974, and 1975; the IFA Shield in 1973, 1974, and 1975; the Rovers Cup in 1969 and 1973; the DCM Trophy in 1973 and 1974; and the Bordoloi Trophy in 1973.

Bhowmick played as a striker and represented two of India’s biggest football clubs: East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, and also represented the Indian national team in various international competitions.

Born on October 2 1950, Bhowmick made his national team debut on July 30 1970 in the Merdeka Cup against Farmosa. He represented India in 24 matches and scored 9 goals in the process, including a hat-trick against the Philippines in the Merdeka Cup in 1971 – a match which India won 5-1.

As a coach, Bhowmick led East Bengal to successive National League titles. He also functioned as Technical Director at Churchill Brothers and oversaw a league triumph in Goa.

Bhowmick was suffering from prolonged illnesses including diabetes, kidney ailments, and chest pain.

An inspiration for millions of Indians, his legacy will be cherished forever.
